How to Price Handmade Jewelry on Etsy

The solved price is the price that leaves exactly your target margin after fees and costs, not a market price. If it is far above what comparable pieces sell for, the answer is usually to simplify the design or source cheaper materials, not to lower the margin target until the math looks friendly.

How to read your result

The solved price is the price that leaves exactly your target margin after fees and costs, not a market price. If it is far above what comparable pieces sell for, the answer is usually to simplify the design or source cheaper materials, not to lower the margin target until the math looks friendly.

Method and formula

Revenue is the discounted item total plus the shipping amount charged to the buyer. Etsy fees are then deducted: a $0.20 listing fee per unit, a 6.5% transaction fee on revenue, and a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee (US Etsy Payments). If Offsite Ads is enabled, add 15% of revenue, or 12% for shops at or above the $10,000 trailing-365-day threshold, capped at $100 per order. Profit = revenue - total fees - total costs (product + actual shipping cost + packaging + labour + other). Margin = profit / revenue. Rates verified 14 Oct 2026 and re-verified 28 Oct 2026 (Wave 1 fee re-verification; all rates matched). This page inverts the forward calculation: instead of checking a price, it solves for the revenue that delivers the target margin, then subtracts shipping charged to give the item price.

Worked examples

Example 1 solves the bracelet price for a 40% margin without Offsite Ads. Example 2 solves the same piece with Offsite Ads at 15%, showing the higher price an ad-attributed sale needs for the same margin. Both were computed and forward-checked by the independent script.

Assumptions and limits

US Etsy Payments rates only; non-US processing rates differ. Sales tax is excluded from the transaction base for US sellers per the base fee profile. The listing fee is charged per unit sold here (one listing renewal per sale); multi-quantity listings renew per unit. Currency conversion (2.5%), regulatory operating fees for non-US markets, returns, and Etsy's one-time new-shop set-up fee are not modelled. Labour is valued at the rate you enter; unpaid time is not free, it is profit you keep only if you choose to value it at $0. A solved price above the market does not make the market wrong; it exposes a cost problem. The $100 Offsite Ads cap means the solve is exact only while the uncapped ad fee stays under $100.

Category guidance: materials and process

Start from quantities: weigh metal, count beads, list findings. A pricing solve is only as honest as its material lines, and quantity-based inputs force those lines to be explicit. Re-run the solve whenever a supplier changes a price per gram or bead cost, rather than carrying an old price forward.

Category guidance: pricing pitfalls

Pitfalls: solving for margin on revenue while thinking in markup on cost (they are different percentages and give different prices); forgetting that shipping charged is part of revenue and therefore part of the fee base; and setting a margin target that leaves no room for remakes or returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fee assumptions

  • Fee rates verified against Etsy's official fee pages on 14 Oct 2026 and re-verified on 28 Oct 2026 (Wave 1 fee re-verification: all rates matched, engine unchanged). US Etsy Payments: $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction on price + shipping charged, 3% + $0.25 processing, Offsite Ads 15%/12% capped at $100 per order.
  • Material cost per piece = (metal grams x price per gram) + (bead count x bead unit price) + findings.
  • Solved price formula: revenue = (0.25 + 0.20 + total costs) / (1 - 0.065 - 0.03 - offsite rate - target margin); price = revenue - shipping charged. The Offsite Ads cap is applied after solving and is flagged if it binds; for very high prices the solved price may need re-checking against the $100 cap.
