Etsy Soap Profit Calculator

Soap bars sell at low prices, so small per-bar costs decide the result. A profit under $1 per bar after labour usually means the batch size is too small or the price is set from ingredient cost alone; check the margin, not just whether profit is positive.

How to read your result

Soap bars sell at low prices, so small per-bar costs decide the result. A profit under $1 per bar after labour usually means the batch size is too small or the price is set from ingredient cost alone; check the margin, not just whether profit is positive.

Method and formula

Revenue is the discounted item total plus the shipping amount charged to the buyer. Etsy fees are then deducted: a $0.20 listing fee per unit, a 6.5% transaction fee on revenue, and a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee (US Etsy Payments). If Offsite Ads is enabled, add 15% of revenue, or 12% for shops at or above the $10,000 trailing-365-day threshold, capped at $100 per order. Profit = revenue - total fees - total costs (product + actual shipping cost + packaging + labour + other). Margin = profit / revenue. Rates verified against Etsy’s official fee pages on 28 Oct 2026. Unit ingredient cost is the batch total divided by sellable bars per batch, after trimming and rejects.

Worked examples

Example 1 prices a cold-process bar at $12 from a $50 batch yielding 20 bars. Example 2 repeats the sale with a 10% discount, showing that a discount cuts both revenue and the fee base, but the per-bar costs do not fall with it. Both examples were computed by the independent script.

Assumptions and limits

US Etsy Payments rates only; non-US processing rates differ. Sales tax is excluded from the transaction base for US sellers per the base fee profile. The listing fee is charged per unit sold here (one listing renewal per sale); multi-quantity listings renew per unit. Currency conversion (2.5%), regulatory operating fees for non-US markets, returns, and Etsy's one-time new-shop set-up fee are not modelled. Labour is valued at the rate you enter; unpaid time is not free, it is profit you keep only if you choose to value it at $0. Soap weight loss during cure (water evaporation) is handled by counting sellable bars at their sold weight, not by a separate shrinkage line; if bars lose significant weight, re-weigh before pricing.

Category guidance: materials and process

Cost soap by batch and by weight. Record oils, lye and fragrance from the recipe's weighed amounts, not from bottle prices, and keep the batch size in the calculation: doubling a batch does not double labour, so larger batches usually improve per-bar profit. Keep fragrance separate because it is the ingredient most likely to dominate cost on scented bars.

Category guidance: pricing pitfalls

Common mistakes: pricing from the oil cost alone; forgetting that trimmed ends and rejected bars still consumed ingredients; and running a percentage sale without re-checking profit, since a 10% discount on a $12 bar removes more than a dollar of revenue while costs stay fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fee assumptions

  • Fee rates verified against Etsy's official fee pages on 28 Oct 2026 (US Etsy Payments: $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction on price + shipping charged, 3% + $0.25 processing, Offsite Ads 15%/12% capped at $100 per order).
  • Unit ingredient cost = (oils + lye + fragrance + additives) / sellable bars per batch.
  • Cure time (typically weeks for cold-process soap) is not a cost line here; it affects cash flow and stock timing, not fee math.
